This morning I opened Washington Post to find a lovely article on the Cherry Tree Rebellion of 1938. Apparently, when the Jefferson Memorial was first designed it was going to take out a large number of cherry trees. Women chained themselves to trees in protest. While they didn’t win entirely the plans for the memorial were downsized and more trees were spared.
A little research turned up this little gem from the Montreal Gazette (Nov 24, 1938).
